Veterans Memorial at Koobs Nature Area

Along with the educational programs, natural beauty, and opportunities for exploration at Koobs Nature Area, the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael is deeply proud to help preserve and honor the Veterans Memorial located within this special community space.

In 1973, as communities across the country were still coming to terms with the losses of the Vietnam War, students created a lasting tribute to 14 former La Sierra High School students who lost their lives while serving our country.

The memorial was built in the school’s metal shop by students honoring their own classmates, making its story especially meaningful. It is recognized as the first known Vietnam War memorial in California and remains a powerful reminder of service, sacrifice, friendship, and remembrance.

Memorial Day & Veterans Day Ceremonies

Each year on Memorial Day and Veterans Day, the Kiwanis Club of Carmichael joins veterans, families, local organizations, and members of the community at Koobs Nature Area to honor those who served—and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The commemorative ceremony includes a color guard, flag raising, trumpet tribute, prayer, music, and the reading of the names of those who were lost. Kiwanis members also provide refreshments and a warm welcome to everyone who comes to pay their respects.

Gates are open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Color Guard Ceremony begins at 11:00 a.m.

All members of the community are welcome to attend, reflect, and help us ensure these stories and sacrifices are never forgotten.

Remembering Jack Koobs

The group photograph below holds special meaning for the Koobs Nature Area and the Carmichael community. It is the final photograph taken of Jack Koobs at one of the memorial services. Jack, seated in the center wearing the white cap, devoted countless hours to preserving this special place and ensuring its history continued to be shared with future generations.
